My Best of 2012

This is  a rather late post, since we are now on the second week of January, (actually the third!  This post has been on my draft folder for over a week! I feel like hitting myself for being late, after promising myself to be always on time!).  Here's a look at the year that was, from somebody who loves to have the last words:

YouTube Villains

I actually jumped into the fray, trying to share my piece of mind at a forum on Female Network on how Raymond, Claudine and friends beat up a columnist and radio personality in his '60s infront of their kids and later accusing the old columnist of child abuse.  I was also shocked (with my heart actually going out to the girl's mom!) and hit the share button when I saw how the "Amalayer" girl went into "bruha"-mode and gave a female guard a mouthful.  These examples of bad behavior have been shared and re-shared on social media. Back in my teens, tales like these spread through word-of-mouth, with the tales getting weirder by the minute, until you won't know what to believe.  Now, every word you say and every bad behavior you exhibit may be documented, word-for-word, blow-by-blow.  You have to be always on your best behavior, PMS and bad-hair day notwithstanding, lest someone will catch you on HD and upload your emotional explosion on YouTube!  Although, of course, we should always be on our best behavior, not just because we fear being YouTubed (take a cue from our moms and grandmas who literally walked adorned with grace).

First, I just took pictures of sunsets, then it literally turned to total randomness-a pic of my SBD lunch, my dog, my eye, a page in a book, my kid's letter, a mole on my nape which I never thought I had.  For someone who grew up  literally studying the scene before hitting click because I only had 36 shots available on my camera, being able to take just about any picture with the proper filter and uploading them to Instagram is heaven!   

Call Me Maybe

That song was just all over the place!  Every person I called, including a senior in her late '60s, has that song for a ringback tone.  It was a case of an LSS song in my brain. No matter how I try to erase it, I end up humming it! 

Gangnam Style


It became the Christmas Party anthem and I couldn't believe Madonna and MC Hammer were dancing to it.  Even my little boy who insists that the song would cause the end of the world would sing it while hugging me:  "Hey, Sexy Lady!"  Me:  "You mean, me?"  Him: "No. It's just a song. "

One Direction




I don't know a thing about the guys of 1D, but Nicole, my second daughter, does!  She adores them, and since I was into boy bands when I was younger, too, I can totally relate and understand.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey was a fan fic that became big and gave new meaning to mommy porn.  Although I am not really a big fan of the books, I am really curious on who would play Christian Grey and Anastacia Steele.  When I saw the hosts of Good Morning America actually drawing a picture of how Christian Grey should look, I realized that the books were big.

After Harry Potter, reading the Hunger Games trilogy was love.  I loved the movie and I can't wait for "Catching Fire."  And hey, I am still not sure if I am Team Peeta or Team Gayle.  Maybe, I am just Team Katniss.

Twilight Ended

I remember having to order the books at Amazon because they were not available in the Philippines (that was the year the Bureau of Customs decided to tax books, even if  local and international law dictates that books are not taxable)just to find out what the fuss is all about.  The concept was interesting and it totally changed my view on what and how vampires are (my childhood concept of vampires is that they sleep in coffins-or hang like bats like in "The Lost Boys"-and that they die under sunlight, not glitter!), but some of the Twilight books bored me though.  I still have to watch the final installment to the Twilight films.

How To Look Young Without Spending A Cent

In your twenties, your body may continue to defy gravity.  But wait till you hit your 30s.  You will start to have lines you never thought you will have and some parts of your body would sag and eventually follow gravity.  

Staying out of the sun and investing in the right anti-aging products may be the keys to looking young.  But there is one beauty secret that would not cost you a cent:   slowing down and living in the moment.

Of course, slowing down is pretty hard.  Everyone of us are such busy bees!  But if you will find out that every time you are majorly stressed, chemicals in your skin's nerve endings are released into your skin and cause inflammation, practically speeding up the skin's aging process, you would definitely want to slow down!  Those lines and wrinkles definitely won't go well with your new outfit or your new hair.

Looking radiant without spending anything is actually easy.  Beating these "stress molecules" can be easy if you vow to do the following:  
Wash your face every night.

Have you ever felt so zonked out that you skip washing your face before sleeping just because you are so tired?  I have. Quite a million times.  It seems to be much of a hassle to spare a few minutes to wash your face when you can do it in the morning instead.  But those few hours do make a difference,  as I have found out, quite a million times, too.  Failing to remove all the gunk in your face can cause enormous zits to suddenly develop overnight.  And I am not even talking about having wrinkles.  Cleaning your skin at night allows it to breathe, making it the best anti-aging regimen you will ever adapt.  This can also prevent rashes (which I had, countless of times, just because I was too lazy to wash my face) and eye infections like pink eye.  Seriously.



Working out gives you the glow. You don't need to be doing Shaun T's  "Insanity" (although his "Hip Hop Abs" may bring fun to your work out regimen).  If you can't spare an hour for your workout time, you don't have to worry.  It is not how long you do your exercise.  It is how you do it regularly.  Cortisol levels can go down by doing just 15 minutes of yoga stretches four or five times a week. If you go for a totally no-impact workout, you can meditate.  Sit comfortably, close your eyes, take deep breaths, and relax every muscle in your body.

Massage your face.

I have read abut a five-minute facial which make your skin instantly firmer.  If your face is constantly puffy, you can massage the lymph nodes to drain the puffiness away. Hold your index and middle-finger together on each hand.  Below each ear, rub down each side of your neck down to your collarbone.  Repeat a few times.  Next,  massage under your jawbone starting under your chin to your ears then down the sides of your neck.  Repeat a few times.  For swollen under-eye area (which can age you immensely), massage gently the skin from the inner to the outer corners of your eye, then hit your temples them go down the side of your face.  Repeat.   


Relax, take a deep breath.

Every time you are trying to rush, your body automatically goes into stress-reaction mode- your heart will beat like crazy and your blood pressure may rise.  That is a signal to take deep breaths which may stop your nerve endings from shooting damaging neuropeptides.  Try inhaling deeply, allowing the air to expand your abdomen, then exhale slowly while flattening your abdomen.  Repeat a few times. Doing this will definitely calm you.  Aileen of iHeart Good Health  wrote a helpful post on the right way to breathe. 

Finally, check your face in the mirror.  You glow, girl!

New Year Basics

Holiday Season-so done.  It is time to transition from the lazy last days of December and into jammin' January.  For most of us folks, that means diving back into work!


No matter what the change of season means to you, these simple reminders will help prepare and empower you for the busy days ahead.

STOCK UP

January for me brings busy days.  Year-end reports to cram for, personnel appraisals, starting work that I should have done last month, but did not because I was on vacation.  For most of us, free time may become a luxury as we struggle to get back into work mode.  Since January marks new beginnings, this month marks the perfect opportunity to prepare yourself to face head on the busy months ahead.  Stock up your energy by resting when you can.  Take your vitamins, watch your diet and get plenty of exercise.  And, here's my favorite, stocking up for me means going to year-end sales to stock up on clothes which cost 50 to 80 percent less than the original price.  Ladies, retail therapy rocks!

RECHARGE

Try to get some "me" time.  "Me" times may be few, but make the most of it.  Go read a good book, get a foot or body massage, get a facial, meet up for lunch or dinner with good friends.  You will feel more alert, refreshed and ready to nail all those work obligations and social engagements.

Cheat Sheet to Being Fit and Healthy

In between keeping a job, being a mom and the chaos that is "life", it is indeed difficult to devote your time to being fit and healthy.  There are days when everything just takes your energy that sticking to your "health plan"is such a chore, until your best plans will turn out to be, well, just plans.

In an ideal world: Run or hit the treadmill daily.  
I have sort of made this one of my resolutions before the year ended.  I promised myself that I would do a 4K run on the treadmill everyday . I  even wrote about it here. The exhilaration that exercise brings kind of wanes on you the next day, though, when you feel various aches on muscles you didn't even know existed.  And you stop. And feel that you have failed.  In the real world:  You can sneak in some cardio anytime and anywhere.  Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator and do some leg lifts while doing your report.  Or you can do some quick, but killer, work-outs like Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred (would rather run the 4K haha.  Her workouts kill me!).

In an ideal world:  Sleep eight hours a day.  For working moms like me, sleep is a luxury. Although I wish for an eight-hour sleep (especially since it slows down the anti-aging process), it won't be happening soon, but In the real world: I can always take a nap.  Napping never fails to energize me. It is such a great pick-me-up that I turn into an energizer bunny after my naps.  Don't nap too long, though.  A 20 to 30 minute nap before 4PM is enough to boost your energy for the rest of the day.

In an ideal world: Eat healthy.  In the real world:  Make the healthier choice. You can't always avoid office cafeteria food.  Try to make wise choices by choosing grilled instead of fried, steamed fish instead of meat, and yogurt instead of ice cream.

Our rigid health resolutions is not the be-all and end-all in achieving our health goals.  Tweaking them a little makes them more doable.  Do you have tips to simplify a difficult health plan? Please feel free to add more doable plans in this cheat sheet.

Five Quick Rules For Living Right

Like my To-Do List, I used to have a very long list of New Year's Resolutions.

This year, I am ditching my big, overwhelming New Year's Resolutions. Taking their place are the following pocket tips for becoming a better me and changing my life, one little step at a time!

In the Moment


Bring passion to your life.

I was recently inspired by Louise of Mommy Practicality, a fellow working mom blogger who also sings and acts on the side.  Being a mom can sometimes make you forget who you are as you concentrate your energy on making your children the best that they can be.  Do not let yourself go.  Don't ever forget yourself.  Stay in tune to what your strengths are as a person.  Think of what gets you all excited.  You may have a 9-to-5 job doing what you are good at, but you still need to pursue something that takes you out of your box. Discover what you love, and make time to do it!

Make it a point to always be on time.

When I was younger, my mom called me "My in-a-minute girl".  I used to marvel at how I thrive on chaos  as I cram and turn up perfect book reports hours before the deadline. A bad habit that carried on to mommyhood as I fail to prepare important things at night, like thaw sausages for breakfast and prepare clothes I will be using for work.  I would be so harassed the next day as I iron my clothes, jump on the car fifteen minutes before 8:00 and pray for no traffic so I won't be late.  I would blame everyone and everything, like the traffic or the alarm clock that failed to ring or my daughter who took a lot of time in the shower, if I am late, except myself.  Maybe, I love the thrill, the rush of trying to make it on time.  This year though, I am not pushing myself to do this (getting a warning for always being late is definitely not what I will wish for.).  Always be on time, because, professionally, you are not in a position to be late for anything.

Cultivate your inner beauty.

Looks are superficial, although I won't blame you if you are such big fans of beauty (because I am, too!).  However, I know of simple women, like my mom, whose simplicity, wisdom and beauty grows on you. This year, I am letting go of all my emotional baggage, repair broken relationships with friends and strive to feed my soul.  Having a good heart is definitely an anti-aging potion.

Play with a child.



I have always been child-like.  I love being around kids, talking and horsing around with them.  You would be very surprised what this can do for your soul, as children are way wiser than you think.  At the very least, act as a child! Get a coloring book and color to your heart's content (this is also a very good stress buster), play with your son's remote-controlled car or turn up the radio and channel your inner Taylor Swift!



Get enough sleep.

How did I ever forget to include this in my previous resolutions?  A good night's sleep will turn you into a fabulous diva as it restores, repairs and rejuvenates your body.  It also makes you less cranky, more alert, and of course, you already know that it strengthens your immune system.  And the best part, it slows down the aging process!

Now, excuse me as I catch some zzsss....

My Energizer!

NaBloPoMo Prompt for the day: "What is your favorite way to recharge when you feel drained of energy?  

Sleep would probably be my favorite way to recharge when I feel drained of energy...sometimes, I wish there are forty-eight hours in a day so I can finish everything in my unchecked to-do-list with time to sleep (because I sleep a measly five hours every night.)

I probably have spent sleepless nights when my three kids were babies.  Those were the times I feel so drained of energy.  But, you know, every time I hold them close while I am in tears because I was so so tired and wanted to sleep, my beautiful babies would suddenly give me a smile-a smile just for me...


...and suddenly, I would be like "Who needs sleep???"

To this day, my children's smiles are my main energizer!

Managing Your To-Do List

A lot of mommy bloggers I know are big fans of To-Do-Lists.  Not me.  Yet. Even if I keep collecting all these Starbucks planners every year.



They just end up empty the whole year because 1.)  they look too beautiful to write on and 2.) I have a ton of other planners (it probably is the easiest thing to give for Christmas!)that I would write a to-do list on different planners I won’t even remember where my to-do list is.
Now, you know why I procrastinate too much.  I don’t plan for my day.
Not that I don’t feel the need to have a to-do list (believe me, my brain gets so mixed up I can’t totally rely on my fried grey matter to remember everything).  I really feel I should.  Because I am a working mother and I have a lot of things to accomplish (which should have been written on my to-do list in the first place).  I am swamped and I feel overwhelmed.
I do try to make a to-do list, which happens every Monday of the week.  The problem is that my list is very long, and a lot of times, the tasks on the list never gets done (most especially if it has the word “workout “on it!).  I feel really great checking items off the list, especially if it involves tasks like “shopping” and “slack-off for one hour” (I do list those for my sanity, honestly!), but I feel really horrible having items that are never ticked off. I really feel I just wasted my energy writing them, without actually doing something to make them happen.
This year, I plan on becoming a big fan of To-Do Lists and I resolve to write on my Planner, even if it looks so pretty to write on.
But, I will ditch the long to-do list. 
I would be making a very short to-do list, classifying them from the very urgent to less urgent (now, let me figure out where I will put “workout”).
I will just be deciding on one task that needs to be accomplished immediately.  Like that month-end report that needs to be turned in within two days.  Then, I will concentrate on finishing that single task, pushing everything else aside. 
After that, I will concentrate on routine tasks which need to get done. 
My little boy, who is on Christmas break has been making a sort of to-do list a while ago, by the way (he probably got it from his Dad’s side haha):
Adrian: “Mom, look at the things I am going to do tomorrow.”
I looked at his list and decided to teach him a lesson in preparing a schedule.
Me: “I think it would be better if you put a time frame on how long you are going to do your task.”
I grabbed his pencil and told him how my daily schedule is.  So, I was blabbering about how my day would be and what I plan to do, plus my list was getting very long, too, when I noticed he was giving me a look.
“Mom, can I get my pencil back now? I  already know that.”

After an Epic Fail, I Am Joining NaBloPoMo Again


So, am I sure I can commit to blogging everyday on this blog after that epic fail I did last month?




I have been blogging since August over at my Mommy Unwired blog. Before that, I probably had three or four neglected blogspot and wordpress blogs, plus a live journal blog, with an average of only one or two posts.  Mommy Unwired was not even meant to be a serious mommy blog.  Before it became all about The Mom, it was all about The Lumpy Space Princess. The reason for getting a custom domain was kind of lame, too, but I am reserving the story behind the custom domain in another post.

This blog was originally created when my eldest daughter turned thirteen and was suddenly all too serious and weird and funny, all at the same time, hence, the  Raised By Teenagers blog name. 


However, being one of the world's greatest procrastinators, the blog shriveled and died a natural blog death by neglect.


Joining the November NaBloPoMo using my Mommy Unwired blog gave me a concrete lesson on commitment.  And making it through the whole November month, posting everyday, made me confident that once I put my heart into something, I can cease to become one of the world's greatest procrastinators.


One post I made, Raising A Child Who Loves To Read, has also been mentioned in BlogHer's Great Posts For the Week For NaBloPoMo.


The NaBloPoMo, by the way, stands for National Blog Posting Month. National Blog Posting Month began in November 2006 as an offshoot of National Novel Writing Month. These writing and blogging events are big events in November. Which was why I decided to join in November.  Because it was my birth month. Because it was NaNoWriMo's (National Novel Writing Month) birth month.  Because it was NaBloPoMo's birth month.  And because I want to write again.


I joined the December NaBloPoMo, but the holiday cheers and stress got into me and writing everyday was a chore.  My everyday post on the theme "WORK" turned into only ten posts, with "WORK" ironically preventing me from doing blog posts.  I was just so tired from work, plus we had to prepare for a Christmas Choral Competition (we won second place, by the way).  Add the preparation for my little boy's Christmas party plus the stress on buying gifts   and Christmas decorating, and I ended up totally un-creative with nothing to write.   

I will try to do NaBloPoMo again this January 2013, which I guess is a perfect time to re-commit myself to blogging daily.

Being a mom made me nurture and care for every one, but myself. Being always the giver, the listener, the comforter, the screamer (!) made me neglect every aspect of myself in epic proportions.  


Starting today, my project will be all about Me, Marie, only better!
